Saint Bartholomew — History & Facts
Few saints have inspired as many artists as Bartholomew, but in 1610, Peter Paul Rubens brought a new, muscular energy to the apostle’s image. This painting is one of a series of apostles Rubens created for the church of San Felipe el Real in Madrid, a commission that marked his growing international reputation. The set was so admired that it was later copied by Spanish painters, and the works themselves were dispersed after the church burned in 1718.
Today, scholars still debate the original order and placement of each apostle in the series, but Saint Bartholomew stands out for its physical immediacy and psychological intensity. Rubens captures Bartholomew at the moment of quiet resolve before his martyrdom, a story recounted in early Christian texts: Bartholomew was flayed alive for his faith. The apostle’s right hand grips the knife, the instrument of his torture, while his gaze turns upward, suggesting both acceptance and hope. The heavy folds of his garment, rendered in bold, swirling brushwork, give his body a monumental presence, while the play of light across his face and hands heightens the drama.
Unlike the more restrained depictions by El Greco, Rubens’s Bartholomew is robust, his flesh and features alive with tension and humanity. The painting’s journey reflects the turbulence of its era. After the destruction of San Felipe el Real, the apostles were scattered, entering royal and private collections across Europe. Saint Bartholomew eventually found its way into the Museo del Prado, where it is now displayed among other works from Rubens’s Spanish period.
This series was pivotal for Rubens, cementing his status as a leading figure of the Baroque and influencing generations of Spanish artists who followed. The painting remains a testament to the power of faith rendered through the physicality and emotion that define Rubens’s style.
