Tarascon Diligence — History & Facts

A wooden ladder leans against the left side of the coach, reaching up toward the roof where a trunk and a bundle are strapped, ready for travel. To the left, a green shutter is closed against a yellow ochre wall, its rough surface rendered with thick, textured brushstrokes. The ground is painted in swirling strokes of pale blue and cream, suggesting the hard sunlit surface of a southern street.

Behind the main coach, another carriage stands partially covered by a green tarpaulin, its wheels and frame painted in quick, energetic lines. The background is dominated by a sunlit wall and a row of white buildings, their forms simplified and outlined in blue and green. Above, the sky is a clear, intense blue, laid on with broad strokes that echo the movement of the paint below.

Every surface in the scene is animated by visible, directional brushwork, from the diagonal marks of the ladder to the circular sweeps of the wheels. Details such as the coach’s lamps, the harnesses, and the shadows beneath the carriages are picked out in contrasting tones, giving the composition a sense of immediacy and presence. In the upper right corner, the green tarpaulin of the second carriage is loosely draped, revealing a glimpse of reddish-brown wood beneath.

The sunlight falls strongly from the upper left, casting sharp blue shadows from the ladder and wheels onto the pale ground. Along the upper edge, the tops of white buildings are outlined with quick blue lines, and a patch of green foliage runs horizontally below them. Thick, impasto strokes define the yellow spokes and rims of the carriage wheels, with uneven outlines that create a sense of movement and energy.
