Civilis’s raised sword is joined by several others, yet there is one more blade than there are visible hands, a detail that intensifies the ritual's sense of urgency and invention.

The figures’ clothing varies from fur-trimmed cloaks to simple tunics, with some faces illuminated in golden light while others recede into shadow, creating a powerful contrast across the composition. To the right, a row of men sits in partial darkness, their expressions ranging from solemn concentration to animated discussion, while goblets and vessels glint on the white tablecloth. The setting is dim and cavernous, with the background dissolving into deep brown and ochre tones, focusing attention on the central drama of the oath.

Rembrandt’s brushwork is loose and textured, especially in the faces and clothing, where thick, expressive strokes convey both the individuality and the collective tension of the group. The composition draws the viewer’s gaze to the intersection of swords, while the surrounding figures form a semicircle that encloses the space in a sense of secrecy and conspiracy. In the lower left corner, a figure in a brownish cloak leans forward, partially turned away and nearly blending into the shadowy background.

The Conspiracy of Claudius Civilis is a history painting by Rembrandt, created in the 1660s for the Amsterdam city hall. Today, the work is exhibited at the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm.
