The Madonna della Vallicella Adored by Seraphim and Cherubim — History & Facts
A radiant burst of golden light streams from the upper edge, illuminating a heavenly assembly of angels gathered around an oval image of the Madonna and Child. This sacred image is supported aloft by a cluster of cherubs and seraphim, their small, rounded bodies twisting as they grasp the frame and gaze adoringly toward its figures. The angels above the frame hover in dynamic poses, their wings outstretched and their expressions filled with awe, while those below kneel or stand among swirling clouds, their hands clasped in reverence or gesturing upward.
Billowing clouds and vaporous light surround the celestial group, creating a sense of ascent and movement that draws every figure toward the glowing apparition at the center. Rich reds, golds, and deep blues dominate the scene, with the Madonna’s dark cloak and the Child’s warm garment contrasting against the luminous flesh of the angels and the cool, misty blues of the sky. Rubens uses energetic, fluid brushwork to model the forms, especially in the angels’ hair, wings, and draperies, where highlights shimmer and contours dissolve into the surrounding light.
The composition is arranged in a sweeping vertical axis, with the oval icon at its heart and the angels forming a spiral that leads the gaze upward through the clouds to the source of divine radiance. Each angel is distinct, some with golden curls and flushed cheeks, others with more mature features, their garments rendered in flowing strokes of white, gold, and crimson. Below the central group, larger winged figures kneel on either side, their bodies twisting as they look upward, their garments catching the light in folds of ochre, silver, and scarlet.
The lower edge of the painting is shrouded in shadow, heightening the sense of elevation and separating the heavenly vision from the earthly realm. Peter Paul Rubens creates this vision in 1608, depicting the Madonna and Child adored by seraphim and cherubim. The subject centers on Mary and the Christ Child, venerated by ranks of angels, a theme that reflects its identification as religious art.
