The Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian — History & Facts

A young man kneels on a rocky outcrop, his body bound to a tree by ropes at the upper arm and wrist, his torso exposed and pierced by two arrows. His head tilts upward and to the left, eyes raised in a rapt, distant gaze, while his parted lips and tense neck suggest both pain and spiritual absorption. One arm is stretched above his head, fingers splayed, while the other is pulled behind the trunk, emphasizing the twist of his muscular torso and the vulnerability of his pose.

A white cloth is wrapped loosely around his hips, leaving the rest of his body unclothed, and the pale, almost luminous skin stands out against the dark trunk and the deep green foliage to the right. The background opens onto a hilly landscape with scattered trees, rendered in earthy browns and olive greens, while the sky is filled with swirling, clouded light in tones of grey and blue. The brushwork is fluid and expressive, especially in the modeling of the flesh and the soft transitions of light across the body, with sharper, more defined lines in the ropes and tree trunk.

The composition is dominated by the diagonal thrust of the saint’s body and the dramatic gesture of his raised arm, creating a sense of upward movement and tension. Large, dark green leaves with thick stems fill the right side of the composition, overlapping the tree trunk and extending toward the edge of the canvas. The light falls most strongly on the figure’s chest, left thigh, and face, creating a dramatic contrast with the shadowed right side of his body and the tree trunk.

In the lower right corner, black Greek letters are inscribed on the pale, angular rock where the figure kneels. The sky at the upper left edge is painted with broad, swirling strokes of white, gray, and blue, fading softly into the landscape below. This painting is considered a work of religious art and belongs to the Mannerism movement.
