The Old Italian Woman — History & Facts
Before Edgar Degas became known for his dancers and racehorses, he painted The Old Italian Woman—a work that has puzzled scholars for decades. Created in 1857, when Degas was just twenty-three, this painting is one of the few surviving examples from his early years, a time when he was still searching for his artistic voice. The sitter’s identity remains uncertain, and no commission documents have surfaced, leading some to speculate that she was a model or a figure from the artist’s own travels in Italy.
What is certain is that Degas kept this painting for many years, suggesting a personal significance beyond mere practice. The painting captures an elderly woman seated in quiet reflection, her worn hands folded in her lap, her gaze cast downward. The light falls softly across her face, picking out the deep lines and the tired set of her mouth, while her simple clothing and shawl speak to a life of modest means. There is no narrative drama here—no myth or legend—but rather an intimate study of age and dignity.
The muted palette and careful observation recall the influence of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, whom Degas admired, yet the psychological depth hints at the direction Degas’s own work would soon take. Unlike the idealized old women of Francesco Hayez or the sentimental genre scenes of Jean-Baptiste Greuze, Degas’s subject is unvarnished, her humanity quietly foregrounded. Little is known about the early journey of The Old Italian Woman; it is not listed in any major 19th-century exhibitions, and its medium remains a subject of debate among conservators. The painting resurfaced in the 20th century, by which time Degas’s reputation was firmly established, and was acquired by a private collector before entering a public collection.
Today, it stands as a rare window onto the formative years of Degas, offering viewers a glimpse of the artist before Impressionism—when he was still learning to see, and to care, for the overlooked faces of everyday life.
