Frans Post

Dutch, 1612–1680

Frans Post was a Dutch painter known for his landscapes and scenes depicting Brazil during the 17th century. He is recognized as one of the first European artists to paint the Brazilian landscape and is significant for his role in documenting the natural beauty and cultural diversity of the region. Post was born in 1612 in Haarlem, Netherlands, and was trained as an artist in the studio of the prominent painter, Jacob van Ruisdael. In 1637, he traveled to Brazil, where he worked as a painter for the Dutch West India Company. His time in Brazil greatly influenced his work, leading to a series of paintings that captured the lush landscapes, indigenous people, and colonial life. Major works include 'View of Olinda' and 'The Sugar Mill.' Post's style is characterized by a meticulous attention to detail and a vibrant use of color, which helped to convey the exotic nature of the Brazilian environment. He returned to the Netherlands in 1640, where he continued to paint until his death in 1680, leaving a legacy as a pioneer of landscape painting in the context of colonial exploration.
