Apostle St Thaddeus (Jude) — History & Facts

A bearded man stands against a dark, undefined background, his body turned slightly to the left while his gaze falls downward and to the right. His right hand grips the staff near his chest, while his left hand holds it lower, just above the bottom edge of the canvas. He wears a voluminous white robe with cool blue shadows, its folds rendered in sweeping, energetic brushstrokes that catch the light on the right side of his body.

Over his shoulders, a deep orange-red cloak wraps around him, the fabric painted with broad, luminous highlights that contrast with the surrounding darkness. The man’s face is elongated and expressive, with strong cheekbones, a furrowed brow, and a thick white beard that frames his mouth and chin. His features are modeled with dramatic light and shadow, the left side of his face almost dissolving into the dark background, while the right side is illuminated.

The background is a deep, unbroken brown-black, which isolates the figure and intensifies the focus on his form and expression. The brushwork is loose and visible, especially in the highlights on the robe and cloak, where swift strokes create a sense of movement and texture. The composition is vertical and tightly cropped, filling the canvas with the figure and his staff, leaving little space around him.

A green, oval-shaped object is attached to the staff just below the man's right hand, standing out against the muted tones of the clothing and background. The upper end of the staff features a metallic, axe-like blade with two prongs and a curved edge, painted in dull gold and brown hues. No secondary figures are present; the man is depicted alone, dominating the entire composition without interruption from other people or objects.

The lower left and right corners of the canvas are filled with deep shadow, with the cloak and robe fading into the darkness at the edges. Light falls most strongly on the man's right forearm and the upper folds of his robe and cloak, while his left side and the background remain almost entirely in shadow.
