Rebecca and Eliezer at the well — History & Facts
A group of women gathers at a well in the foreground, each holding or reaching for large water jars. At the centre, a man in a pale robe and turban gestures towards a woman in a blue-green dress, who stands with one hand on her chest and the other at her side. The women form a sweeping arc from left to right, their postures and gazes drawing attention to the central pair.
Several women kneel or bend over their vessels, while others stand upright, some looking towards the man and woman, others turned away or engaged with each other. Behind the main figures, a monumental stone structure rises, topped with a large sphere, and further back, blocky buildings and trees recede into a luminous landscape. The sky is filled with broad, golden clouds, casting a warm, even light over the scene and creating deep shadows beneath the figures and architecture.
The colour scheme is dominated by ochres, greens, and muted reds, with the drapery of the figures painted in soft, harmonious tones. Brushwork appears smooth and controlled, with subtle transitions of light and shade modelling the forms and giving the figures a sculptural presence. Details such as the folds of fabric, the texture of the jars, and the leafy trees in the background are rendered with careful precision.
Each figure’s expression is calm and composed, contributing to the scene’s sense of quiet narrative. The composition is balanced, with the main action slightly off-centre and the architectural elements anchoring the right side of the painting. A sense of depth is achieved through the placement of figures in overlapping groups and the receding lines of the buildings and landscape. Nicolas Poussin paints this scene in 1648, depicting the biblical story of Rebecca and Eliezer at the well.
