French, 1594–1665
Nicolas Poussin (1594–1665) was a French painter associated with the Baroque style, though he spent most of his career in Rome. He specialized in religious and mythological scenes for Italian and French patrons, and briefly served as First Painter to the King in Paris before returning to Rome. Poussin's paintings emphasized clarity, order, and line, and in his later years, landscapes became more prominent in his work. His style influenced classically-oriented artists into the 20th century.
