Saints Amandus and Walburga — History & Facts
In 1610, Peter Paul Rubens received a commission that would help define his early Antwerp years: a series of altarpieces for the Benedictine abbey of St. Amand, including the now-rare depiction of Saints Amandus and Walburga. What makes this work remarkable is that it brings together two saints who, though venerated locally, seldom appear together in art.
Their joint presence speaks to the specific devotional needs of the abbey, which claimed both as patrons, and to Rubens’s ability to tailor his compositions to the wishes of his ecclesiastical clients. Rubens captures the saints at a moment of spiritual authority and intercession. Saint Amandus, bishop and missionary, stands with his bishop’s crozier, his gesture one of blessing and guidance, while Saint Walburga, the English abbess, holds her distinctive abbess’s staff and a vial, alluding to the miraculous healing oil associated with her cult. The rich, swirling drapery and luminous flesh tones are hallmarks of Rubens’s early Baroque style, drawing the eye to the saints’ faces and hands—sites of both action and sanctity.
Compared to the more restrained, linear treatments of saints by El Greco, Rubens’s figures pulse with physical presence and warmth, inviting viewers into their sphere of influence. The fate of Saints Amandus and Walburga after its creation is less well documented than some of Rubens’s grander commissions. The painting likely remained at the abbey until the upheavals of the late 18th century, when many church treasures were dispersed or lost. Its current whereabouts are uncertain, and the medium—whether oil on panel or canvas—remains a matter of scholarly debate.
Nevertheless, the work is recognized as part of Rubens’s formative period, when he was consolidating his reputation in Antwerp and shaping the visual language that would dominate Catholic Europe for decades.
