Time defending Truth against the attacks of Envy and Discord — History & Facts
When Time defending Truth against the attacks of Envy and Discord left the studio of Nicolas Poussin in 1641, it was already bound for a royal audience. The painting was commissioned by Cardinal Giulio Rospigliosi—later Pope Clement IX—as a gift for Philip IV of Spain, a monarch known for his passion for collecting allegorical works. This commission placed Poussin at the heart of a diplomatic exchange, where paintings served as tokens of alliance and intellect between the courts of Rome and Madrid. In the scene, Poussin chooses the dramatic instant when Time, personified as an aged, winged man, rushes to shield the radiant figure of Truth from the grasping hands of Envy and the chaos sown by Discord.
Truth, serene and illuminated at the center, is draped in white and blue, her purity threatened by Envy’s greenish, contorted form and Discord’s wild, red hair. Time’s hourglass and scythe are clear symbols of his relentless power, while the broken chains at Truth’s feet hint at liberation from slander. The composition’s clarity and balance recall the influence of Raphael, but Poussin’s cool restraint and precise gestures set his allegories apart from the more theatrical interpretations by contemporaries like Rubens. The painting’s journey from Rome to Spain marks it as a rare example of Poussin’s work created specifically for the Spanish royal collection, where it entered the Museo del Prado.
Over the centuries, it has been admired for its intellectual rigor and its embodiment of the Baroque fascination with allegory. While the original medium is uncertain—oil on canvas is likely, given the period and Poussin’s practice—the painting’s surface still bears the careful, enamel-like finish typical of his mature style. Today, it stands as a testament to the artist’s reputation as a painter-philosopher, and to the enduring appeal of allegory in the courts of seventeenth-century Europe.
