Water Lilies in Giverny — History & Facts

Clusters of water lilies float across the surface of a pond, their rounded green leaves and pale blossoms scattered in loose groups from the lower left to the upper right of the composition. Soft pink and white flowers emerge among the pads, some standing alone, others grouped in small gatherings, with the most concentrated patch of blossoms appearing near the upper left and lower right edges. The water itself is rendered in a shimmering field of muted blues, greens, violets, and ochres, with broad, sweeping brushstrokes that blend the reflections of sky and foliage into a luminous, almost abstract surface.

Hints of purple and blue at the top and right edges suggest the presence of overhanging trees or sky, their forms dissolved into color and light. The paint is applied in loose, visible strokes, some short and dappled, others long and fluid, creating a sense of movement and depth in the water. Yellow-green lily pads drift in and out of focus, some sharply defined with touches of white or dark green, others melting into the water’s surface.

At the lower right, the artist’s signature and the date 1917 are clearly inscribed, anchoring the painting in a specific moment. The uppermost edge of the painting is bordered by a faint, cool band of lavender and blue, suggesting reflected sky or distant foliage. Broad, horizontal strokes of pale yellow and ochre run across the upper right quadrant, blending into the water and adding warmth to the surface.

In the lower left corner, two large, overlapping green lily pads are outlined with touches of cream, their edges crisply defined against the water. Soft violet and blue tones are brushed along the left and right borders, framing the composition and enhancing the sense of depth. The subject, water lilies, is central to the composition, with no horizon or shoreline visible, immersing the viewer entirely in the floating world of the pond. The genre is landscape painting, but the scene is distilled to its essentials: water, lilies, and reflections.
