Italian, 1884–1920
Amedeo Modigliani (1884–1920) was an Italian painter and sculptor who worked mainly in France as part of the École de Paris. He became known for portraits and nudes with elongated faces and figures, a modern style that was not appreciated during his lifetime but gained popularity after his death. Born in Livorno to a Sephardic Jewish family, Modigliani studied art in Italy before moving to Paris in 1906. He focused on sculpture from 1909 to 1914, exhibiting stylised works with the Cubists in 1912, and died in Paris at age 35 from tubercular meningitis.
