Swiss, 1735–1783
Caspar Wolf (1735–1783) was a Swiss painter born in Muri, Aargau. He became known for dramatic depictions of glaciers, caves, waterfalls, and gorges, influenced by Albrecht von Haller's poetry and the Sturm und Drang movement. Wolf worked as a decoration painter in several German cities, spent time in Paris, and later settled in Bern, where he produced paintings for Abraham Wagner and traveled in Berner Oberland and Wallis. He died in Heidelberg in poor circumstances; his works were later exhibited in various locations, and his son Theodor Wolf became a still life painter.
