French, 1817–1878
Charles-François Daubigny (1817–1878) was a French painter and printmaker associated with the Barbizon school and regarded as a precursor of impressionism. Born in Paris to a family of artists, he learned art from his father and uncle and later studied with several teachers. Daubigny initially worked as a graphic artist, illustrating books and magazines, and created engravings early in his career. He later painted landscapes outdoors, experimented with techniques such as cliché verre and aquatint, and used a studio boat to paint scenes along the Seine and Oise.
