Currier & Ives.

American, 1834

Currier & Ives was an American printmaking firm founded in 1834 by Nathaniel Currier and later joined by James Merritt Ives. The company is best known for its lithographs that depicted American life, landscapes, and historical events during the 19th century. Currier was born in 1813 in Roxbury, Massachusetts, and Ives was born in 1824 in New York City. Currier trained as an engraver and worked for several print shops before establishing his own business. Ives joined the firm in 1857, and together they produced thousands of prints, becoming synonymous with American art of the period. Their works often featured scenes of rural life, transportation, and significant events, capturing the spirit of the era. Currier & Ives prints are significant for their role in popularizing American themes and are now considered important historical documents that reflect the social and cultural landscape of 19th-century America.
