La Fornarina — History & Facts

A young woman sits against a dark background of broad-leaved foliage, her body turned slightly to the viewer’s left while her face looks outward with a gentle, composed expression. Her skin appears luminous and smooth, with a delicate blush on her cheeks and subtle shadows modeling her features. Her upper body is nude, with her left arm bent to cover her chest and her right hand resting on a soft red drapery at her lap.

A transparent veil is draped loosely over her left shoulder and gathered under her right hand, partially obscuring her abdomen and navel. The armband on her upper left arm is inscribed with the artist’s signature, 'RAPHAEL VRBINAS', in gold letters on blue. The setting is dominated by a mass of dark, leafy branches that rise behind her, with only a hint of blue sky visible in the upper left corner.

The brushwork is fine and controlled, especially in the rendering of the veil’s transparency and the soft transitions of light on skin. A striped yellow, blue, and white turban-like headdress wraps around the woman’s dark hair, with a gold tassel hanging down on the right side of her head. The foliage behind her is painted in deep, nearly black greens, with individual leaf shapes visible around her shoulders and head.

The upper left corner of the painting shows a patch of dark blue sky, contrasting with the dense greenery elsewhere. Light falls predominantly from the left, illuminating her face, left shoulder, and chest, while her right arm and the background remain in shadow. The red drapery at her lap is rendered with soft folds and subtle variations in tone, suggesting a plush, velvety texture.

Her fingers are long and slender, with the nails carefully delineated and the knuckles subtly modeled by gentle shading. La fornarina is attributed to Raphael and dates from the early 16th century, between about 1519 and 1520. The painting is associated with the High Renaissance movement.
