Lady with a Parasol — History & Facts
When Edgar Degas painted Lady with a Parasol in 1871, he was living in exile in New Orleans, having fled the chaos of the Franco-Prussian War in Paris. This work is one of the rare pieces from his American sojourn, a period that remains less documented than his later Parisian years. The painting’s origins are clouded by uncertainty: its medium is not definitively recorded, and it was never exhibited during Degas’s lifetime.
Scholars have long debated whether the sitter was a family member or a local acquaintance, as Degas’s letters from this period mention both possibilities but never name the model. The scene captures a woman paused mid-stride, her parasol tilted against the southern sun, her gaze averted from the viewer. The crispness of her silhouette and the soft, atmospheric treatment of the background suggest a fleeting moment, as if she has just turned away from a conversation. The parasol itself is more than an accessory—it shields her both from the elements and, perhaps, from the scrutiny of the world, a motif Degas would return to in later works.
Unlike the formal, static portraits of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, Degas’s lady feels caught in motion, her presence immediate and unposed, a hallmark of the Impressionist interest in modern life. After Degas’s return to France, Lady with a Parasol remained in family hands for decades, rarely seen by the public and omitted from early catalogues of his work. Its rediscovery in the mid-20th century sparked renewed interest in Degas’s American period, though its provenance prior to that remains patchy. Today, the painting is recognized as a bridge between Degas’s early academic training and his later, more experimental Impressionist style.
It hangs now in a private collection, surfacing occasionally for exhibitions, and serves as a quiet testament to a formative, restless chapter in Degas’s career.
