Landscape with Windblown Trees — History & Facts

When Vincent van Gogh painted Landscape with Windblown Trees in 1885, he was still years away from the blazing color and fame that would define his later work. Yet this painting stands out as one of his earliest forays into the expressive landscapes that would become his signature. Scholars have long noted how, in this period, van Gogh was inspired by the Dutch countryside around Nuenen, where he lived with his parents, and was deeply influenced by the moody realism of the Hague School.

The painting’s uncertain medium—possibly oil, but not definitively established—adds a layer of mystery, as does the fact that it is rarely exhibited and little mentioned in van Gogh’s own letters. In the picture, a cluster of trees bends dramatically under a gusty sky, their branches twisting as if caught mid-struggle with the wind. The earth is rendered in dark, heavy tones, the brushwork thick and urgent, capturing the raw energy of nature rather than a peaceful scene. This is not a tranquil countryside: the trees seem to fight for their footing, their forms echoing the hardships van Gogh saw in rural life.

The low, brooding sky presses down, reminiscent of Jean-François Millet’s somber rural scenes, whom van Gogh admired deeply. Unlike later works where color explodes across the canvas, here the drama is in the movement and the weight of the land and sky. Landscape with Windblown Trees has a quieter history than many of van Gogh’s later masterpieces. Created during his Nuenen period, it was likely never sold or exhibited in his lifetime, and its early provenance remains unclear.

It passed through several private collections before being recognized as an authentic van Gogh, a process complicated by the artist’s evolving style and the painting’s subdued palette. Today, it is held in a private collection and is rarely seen by the public, offering a rare glimpse into van Gogh’s formative years and his search for a visual language that would later change the course of modern art.
