Manusso Theotokopoulos — History & Facts
No other work by El Greco bears the name Manusso Theotokopoulos, and the painting’s title itself is a puzzle: “Manusso” is not a Spanish or Greek word, and it does not appear in contemporary inventories. Some scholars suggest the name may be a corruption or affectionate nickname for a member of El Greco’s own family, perhaps even his son Jorge Manuel Theotokopoulos, who often collaborated with him in his Toledo workshop. The painting dates to 1603, a period when El Greco was at the height of his fame, receiving major commissions for Toledo’s churches and monasteries.
Yet, unlike his grand altarpieces, this is a work shrouded in mystery, its sitter’s identity and purpose still debated. The figure in Manusso Theotokopoulos is captured in a moment of introspection, his gaze turned slightly away from the viewer, hands resting gently on a closed book. The sitter’s elongated features—hallmarks of El Greco’s late style—are accentuated by a shaft of light that carves out his face from the shadowy background, lending an air of spiritual intensity. The book may hint at learning or devotion, and the subdued palette draws the eye to the sitter’s thoughtful expression.
Unlike the formal, almost rigid portraits of Titian, whom El Greco admired, this work seems to reach for the inner life of its subject, dissolving the boundary between portrait and meditation. Little is known about the painting’s early history; no commission documents survive, and its medium remains uncertain, though oil on canvas is likely given El Greco’s practice at the time. It is not listed in the major early inventories of his works, and its whereabouts during the centuries that followed are unclear. Only in the twentieth century did scholars begin to study it closely, debating both its attribution and the identity of “Manusso.” Today, Manusso Theotokopoulos stands as a testament to the enigmatic side of El Greco’s late career, inviting viewers to ponder both the man behind the brush and the sitter behind the name.
