When Taras Shevchenko completed Mother's Head in 1838, he was still a serf, owned by the Russian nobleman Pavel Engelhardt. This small portrait, created during the very year Shevchenko’s friends began raising funds to buy his freedom, stands as a rare and intimate glimpse into the private world of a man who would soon become Ukraine’s national poet. The subject is believed to be Shevchenko’s own mother, Catherine, who had died when he was just eleven—a loss that haunted his poetry and art for the rest of his life. The work captures a moment of quiet reflection, the sitter’s gaze lowered and her features softened by gentle modeling.

Her headscarf, rendered with delicate attention, marks her as a peasant woman, while the subtle play of light across her face suggests both dignity and fatigue. Unlike the grand, idealized portraits of mothers by artists such as Jean-Baptiste Greuze, Shevchenko’s approach is direct and unsentimental, focusing on the individual rather than the archetype. The absence of background detail draws the viewer’s attention entirely to the face, inviting a personal connection. The exact medium of Mother's Head remains uncertain, though it is likely a drawing or small painting, typical of Shevchenko’s early works.

The piece has never been widely exhibited and is known today primarily through reproductions and references in Ukrainian art scholarship. Its creation marks an important stage in Shevchenko’s development, just before he gained his freedom and formal art education at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg.

Today, Mother's Head is valued not only as an early work by a major cultural figure but also as a rare personal tribute in a career soon to be defined by public themes and national struggle.
