Taras Shevchenko

Ukrainian, 1814–1861

Taras Shevchenko (1814–1861) was a Ukrainian poet, writer, artist, and public figure, born into a family of serfs in Morintsy, in what was then the Russian Empire. He showed artistic talent from a young age and later studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. Shevchenko wrote poetry in Ukrainian and prose in Russian, and his collection "Kobzar" became foundational for modern Ukrainian literature and language. Due to his involvement with the Brotherhood of Saints Cyril and Methodius, he was exiled to Central Asia, where he continued to create despite restrictions, and after his release, he died in Saint Petersburg.
