St. Paul — History & Facts

A bearded man sits against a dark, undefined background, his head turned slightly to the left and his gaze lifted as if in thought. A voluminous cloak in deep red and pinkish hues wraps around his shoulders and arm, its folds rendered with sweeping, expressive brushstrokes that catch the light. Beneath the cloak, a pale blue-grey garment emerges at the sleeve, painted with loose, energetic strokes that suggest the texture of fabric.

The man’s face is long and angular, with high cheekbones, a furrowed brow, and dark, deep-set eyes that convey a sense of contemplation. His hair is dark and thinning at the crown, while his beard is full and streaked with lighter tones. The background is a warm brown, painted with soft, swirling strokes that create a subtle halo effect around the figure’s head and shoulders.

Light falls from the upper left, illuminating the man’s forehead, nose, and hands, and casting gentle shadows that model the forms of his face and drapery. The brushwork is vigorous and visible, especially in the folds of the cloak and the highlights on the hands, giving the surface a sense of movement and immediacy. A tall, dark staff with a rounded top rises behind the man's left shoulder, held upright in his left hand.

The man's right hand holds a small, rectangular white book or tablet, angled toward the viewer, with faint lines of gold writing visible on its surface. The fingers of both hands are elongated and thin, with sharply defined knuckles and prominent veins painted in cool tones. The lower left corner of the painting is filled by the man's sleeve and hand, rendered in pale, almost silvery blue and white brushstrokes.

The background, though mostly dark brown, contains subtle variations in tone, with lighter, almost reddish patches near the upper right edge. A highlight runs along the outer edge of the staff, catching the light and separating it from the background. The lower right corner of the painting is dominated by deep maroon and pink folds of the cloak, with broad, sweeping lines of paint.

Edges of the figure, especially around the head and shoulders, are softly blurred, blending slightly into the surrounding background.
