The Parsonage Garden at Nuenen in the Snow — History & Facts
A pale yellow sky glows above a wintry garden, its light diffused through a haze of bare trees and distant mist. The foreground is dominated by a snow-covered roof at lower left, its angled surface catching the faintest hint of warmth from the sky. A narrow path, edged with patches of snow, curves through the center of the garden, leading the eye toward the horizon.
Leafless trees and dark, spindly branches rise along both sides of the path, their forms sharply outlined against the muted ground and sky. Two small figures stand in the garden: one in the lower right, facing away, and another farther back, near the center, both dwarfed by the geometry of the garden beds and the tall trees. The beds themselves are marked out by low fences and rows, their surfaces dusted with snow and interrupted by tufts of brown and grey vegetation.
Beyond the garden walls, a line of houses and sheds stretches across the middle distance, their roofs also capped with snow. At the far end of the view, a solitary church with a pointed steeple rises against the glowing sky, framed by the vertical lines of poplars and the horizontal sweep of the landscape. The brushwork is vigorous and textured, with visible strokes suggesting both the roughness of the earth and the softness of the snow.
Dark outlines and earthy browns dominate the lower half, while the upper part of the painting is suffused with yellows and greys, creating a subdued, wintry palette. The composition is carefully structured, with the central path and the vertical trees guiding the view toward the distant church and sky. Small details, such as the delicate tracery of branches and the subtle variations in snow cover, add to the sense of quiet observation. Vincent van Gogh created The Parsonage Garden at Nuenen in the Snow in 1885, depicting a garden in the village of Nuenen.
