Young Peasant — History & Facts
In the spring of 1889, just weeks before admitting himself to the asylum at Saint-Rémy, Vincent van Gogh painted Young Peasant—one of his final tributes to rural life before his world narrowed to hospital walls. This work stands out because it was created during a feverish period of productivity, when Van Gogh, despite his mental turmoil, produced some of his most searching portraits of working people. Unlike his more famous starry landscapes, this painting is part of a quieter but deeply personal series, reflecting his lifelong empathy for those who worked the land. The young peasant in the painting sits with hands folded, her gaze lowered, caught in a moment of rest or reflection.
Van Gogh’s choice of earthy tones and thick, restless brushwork gives the figure a sense of physical presence and emotional weight. The roughness of her clothing and the simplicity of the background focus all attention on her face, where fatigue and dignity mingle. This direct, almost confrontational intimacy recalls the earlier peasant portraits of Jean-François Millet, whom Van Gogh greatly admired, but here the mood is more restless, the paint more alive, as if the artist’s own agitation has seeped into the canvas. The exact medium of Young Peasant remains uncertain, as does its early history—unlike many of Van Gogh’s works, it was not immediately recognized or widely exhibited.
It is likely that the painting remained in the artist’s family or among friends for some time, passing quietly from hand to hand. Today, it is valued as a key example of Van Gogh’s late portraiture, bridging his early Dutch period and the more experimental work of his final years. Its presence in a modern collection allows viewers to trace the evolution of Van Gogh’s vision, from the dark interiors of The Potato Eaters to the bright, searching faces of his Provençal subjects.
