Chinese Painting and Traditional Chinese Art, Page 8

Chinese painting is a painting tradition of brush and ink on silk or paper that flourished in China from the Song dynasty (960–1279) through the Qing (1644–1911). Its great subjects were landscape, called shan shui or “mountains and water,” figures, and birds and flowers, painted on hanging scrolls, handscrolls, album leaves and fans and prized for expressive brushwork rather than realistic illusion. Its painters include Fan Kuan, Guo Xi, Emperor Huizong, Zhao Mengfu, Shen Zhou and Bada Shanren.
