Arthur Devis

English, 1712–1787

Arthur Devis was an English portrait painter active during the 18th century. He is best known for his depictions of the English gentry and his contributions to the genre of conversation pieces. Devis was born in 1712 in England and received his artistic training in the early 1730s, likely under the influence of established portraitists of his time. He became a member of the Royal Academy in 1768, which marked a significant recognition of his work. His career flourished in the mid-18th century, and he produced numerous works that captured the social life and customs of the English upper class. Major works include 'The Family of Sir William Heathcote' and 'The Children of Mr. and Mrs. William Hutton.' Devis's style is characterized by its attention to detail and the use of light to create a sense of intimacy among his subjects. He is considered a significant figure in the development of English portraiture, particularly in the conversation piece genre, which combined portraiture with narrative elements.
