The Harvest — History & Facts

A patchwork of golden wheat fields stretches across the foreground, broken by a low fence and thick green vegetation that runs horizontally through the lower third of the scene. A single figure in a white shirt and blue trousers bends to work in the field, nearly hidden by the dense greenery near the center right edge. To the left, a large haystack rises, topped with a wooden ladder and flanked by a pile of pale straw and a blue cart with prominent wheels.

The middle ground is dotted with farm buildings, their ochre and red roofs standing out against the yellow fields, while a white farmhouse with a red roof anchors the right side. Beyond the fields, a line of dark green trees marks the boundary before the land rises to meet the distant blue hills and the low, pale silhouette of Montmajour on the horizon. The sky above is a clear, luminous blue, painted with broad, horizontal strokes that echo the bands of color in the land below.

Van Gogh uses thick, textured paint throughout, especially in the wheat and foliage, where the direction and movement of the brushstrokes suggest the ripeness and density of the crops. The composition is carefully layered, with horizontal bands of color and activity leading the eye from the immediate foreground through the fields to the distant hills. Small details, such as the red wheels of a cart and the subtle shadows cast by the buildings and haystack, add rhythm and depth to the rural scene.
