Saint Francis In Ecstasy — History & Facts

His gaze is turned upward toward the top left corner, where a burst of radiant light streams in from outside the frame. The figure’s face is illuminated by this light, which sharply models his cheekbones and brow, while casting the right side of his face into shadow. His expression is one of rapt attention and spiritual longing, with wide, dark eyes and parted lips.

The folds of his robe are rendered in broad, fluid brushstrokes, with subtle transitions of ochre, grey, and brown that suggest the rough texture of the fabric. At the lower left, a human skull rests on a ledge of rock, painted with careful attention to the bone’s surface and hollow eye sockets. The background is a flat, cool grey, devoid of any landscape or architectural detail, which focuses attention on the figure and the symbolic objects.

The composition is tightly framed, with the saint’s head and hands dominating the space and the skull anchoring the foreground. The light from the upper left creates a dramatic contrast, highlighting the saint’s uplifted face and the gesture of his crossed hands. The painting’s surface shows visible brushwork, especially in the modeling of the hands and the folds of the robe, giving a sense of immediacy and movement.

A thin, knotted cord is visible around the figure’s waist, emerging from beneath the folds of his robe. The left edge of the painting shows a faint, vertical band of lighter grey that subtly distinguishes it from the rest of the background. The burst of light in the upper left corner consists of several distinct, pale rays extending diagonally across the grey backdrop.

The lower right corner is filled by the dark shadow cast by the figure’s robe, contrasting with the illuminated left side. The paint handling in the background is smoother and more blended than the textured brushwork used for the robe and hands. The skull’s shadow is cast to the left, grounding it firmly on the mottled, earth-toned surface of the rock ledge. Saint Francis in Ecstasy was created by El Greco between 1577 and 1580, during the 16th century.
