Saint Matthew (Oviedo) — History & Facts
No two versions of Saint Matthew by El Greco are exactly alike, and the Oviedo canvas stands out as part of a rare, nearly complete apostolate—a series of apostles painted for the Church of San Vicente in Toledo around 1590. Unlike many apostolates, which have been dispersed or lost over centuries, the Oviedo group preserves the artist’s original vision for nearly all twelve apostles. This continuity offers a unique window into El Greco’s evolving style and religious imagination at a moment when Spain was fiercely defending Catholic identity in the wake of the Counter-Reformation. In Saint Matthew (Oviedo), the evangelist is caught in a moment of quiet inspiration.
The painter chooses to show Matthew holding a book, his symbol as the author of the first Gospel, and gazing upward as if awaiting divine guidance. The elongated figure, with its narrow face and expressive hands, is classic El Greco: spiritual intensity rendered through stretched anatomy and flickering, almost supernatural light. The background is an undefined, stormy haze, focusing all attention on Matthew’s rapt expression.
Compared to Caravaggio’s earthy, dramatic Calling of Saint Matthew, El Greco’s vision is otherworldly, less concerned with narrative action than with the inner flame of faith. The original commission for the apostolate likely came from a local patron in Toledo, but the paintings soon traveled north to Oviedo’s cathedral, where they have remained for centuries. Their journey spared them the fate of many Spanish religious works, which were scattered or destroyed during the Napoleonic invasions and later secularizations. The Oviedo Saint Matthew is now a cornerstone of the city’s art collection, and a touchstone for scholars tracing El Greco’s late Renaissance synthesis of Venetian color, Byzantine iconography, and Spanish mysticism.
The medium of the painting is still debated, though it is generally considered oil on canvas, in keeping with El Greco’s practice at the time.
