Saint Simon (Oviedo) — History & Facts
Few paintings by El Greco have traveled as far as Saint Simon (Oviedo), which began its life in Spain but now resides far from the artist’s adopted Toledo. This work is one of a celebrated series of apostles painted around 1590, a commission that once adorned the high altar of the Church of San Pedro in Oviedo. Over centuries, these canvases were dispersed, their fates diverging—some lost, some in private hands, others, like this one, preserved in museum collections.
The series is notable for its unity of vision: each apostle rendered as an individual, yet unmistakably part of a mystical brotherhood. Saint Simon (Oviedo) captures the apostle at a moment of introspective calm. Simon, sometimes called the Zealot, is shown holding a saw—the instrument of his martyrdom—clutched to his chest. His upward gaze and elongated, expressive hands are trademarks of El Greco, who often used such gestures to suggest spiritual yearning.
The background is a stormy, abstracted sky, pressing the figure forward into the viewer’s space. Compared to the more restrained apostles of Titian or Zurbarán, El Greco’s Simon is restless and searching, his features lit by an inner fire that animates the entire composition. The painting’s journey from Oviedo to its current home reflects the tumult of Spanish religious art in the centuries after El Greco’s death. While records of its early ownership are sparse, it is known that the apostle series was split up during the 19th century, as church treasures were sold or relocated.
Saint Simon (Oviedo) has passed through several hands, surviving periods of neglect and rediscovery, before entering a public collection where it stands as a testament to El Greco’s late-career style. Today, it is valued not only for its artistry but also as a rare survivor of a once-united cycle, a window into the devotional practices and artistic ambitions of late 16th-century Spain.
