The Hunt of Meleager — History & Facts
A procession of hunters and horses moves from right to left across a wide, darkened landscape, their attention fixed on the action ahead. At the center, a young man in a yellow tunic rides a rearing white horse, his body twisted as he looks toward the left, gripping a spear in his right hand. Beside him, a woman in a blue dress sits astride another white horse, her posture upright and commanding, her gaze directed toward the left where the hunt is underway.
To the left, a muscular figure in a yellow garment lunges forward, his left arm extended as he restrains a hound eager to leap into the fray. Several dogs cluster at the feet of the hunters, their bodies tense and alert, while other figures on foot and horseback fill the scene, each caught in a moment of anticipation or action. The background opens to a distant landscape under a stormy sky, with blue-grey mountains and a shaft of light breaking through the clouds, illuminating the central group and highlighting the drama.
The figures are arranged in a frieze-like composition, their gestures and glances interlocking to guide the viewer’s eye across the canvas. Poussin uses a palette dominated by earth tones, ochres, and deep blues, with flashes of white and gold accentuating the horses and the main protagonists. The brushwork is controlled and precise, with smooth transitions in the modeling of flesh and fabric, and careful attention to the anatomy of both humans and animals.
Details such as the intricate braids in the horses’ manes, the folds of drapery, and the gleaming metal of weapons and armor reveal the artist’s meticulous technique. The overall effect is one of dynamic movement held in a moment of suspense, as the hunt prepares to reach its climax. The Hunt of Meleager is painted by Nicolas Poussin in the 1630s, as dated between circa 1634 and circa 1639.
