German, 1848–1916
Adolf Kaufmann (1848–1916) was an Austrian painter known for landscapes and marine scenes. Born in Opava, he was initially self-taught before studying in Paris and traveling widely in Europe and the Middle East. He lived in several cities before settling in Vienna in 1890, where he opened a studio and co-founded an art school for women. Influenced by the Barbizon school and paysage intime, he exhibited frequently, used several pseudonyms, and sold works to European royalty; his paintings are held in museums in Opava, Istanbul, and Vienna.
