Paul Klee

Swiss, 1879–1940

Paul Klee (1879–1940) was a Swiss-born German artist whose distinctive style drew on expressionism, cubism, and surrealism. He explored color theory in depth and wrote extensively on the subject, with his lectures later published as the Paul Klee Notebooks. Klee taught at the Bauhaus school in Germany and his works reflected his humor, personal moods, beliefs, and musical background. Though initially trained in music, he turned to visual art as a teenager, keeping a diary from around 1897 that offers insight into his life and ideas.
