Harvest in Provence — History & Facts
In June 1888, Vincent van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo about his feverish attempts to capture the golden fields of Provence, declaring, “I am almost sure that these canvases will tell you what I can’t say in words.” Harvest in Provence is one of several paintings from that summer in Arles, a period when Van Gogh produced some of his most celebrated landscapes in rapid succession. Unlike his Paris works, these canvases were painted outdoors, directly under the southern sun, and Van Gogh himself considered them among his “best” efforts to convey the intense light and rural labor of the region. At the heart of Harvest in Provence, the viewer finds a patchwork of wheat fields, dotted with bent-backed figures reaping the crop beneath a sky of searing blue. Van Gogh’s thick, directional brushstrokes animate the scene: the yellow fields ripple with movement, and the cypress trees stand sentinel against the horizon.
The composition captures a moment of communal toil at the height of the harvest, with the farmhouses and haystacks anchoring the landscape in human activity. Unlike the idealized rural scenes of Jean-François Millet, whom Van Gogh admired, this painting is immediate and personal, its colors and lines shaped by the artist’s own emotional response to the land. The exact medium of Harvest in Provence is not always specified, though Van Gogh’s letters suggest oil on canvas, his favored support during this period. The painting’s early history remains somewhat obscure; it was likely kept by Theo van Gogh after Vincent’s death, as were many of his Arles works.
Over time, Harvest in Provence has become emblematic of Van Gogh’s late style, marked by vibrant color and expressive brushwork. Today, it is widely reproduced and studied as a key work from Van Gogh’s transformative months in Provence, capturing both the beauty and intensity of rural life in the artist’s own hand.
