Lying Cow — History & Facts
Few works from Vincent van Gogh's early Dutch years have survived, and Lying Cow is among the rare glimpses into the artist’s formative period before his explosion of color in France. Painted in 1883, during his time in Drenthe, the piece belongs to a series of studies of rural life that occupied van Gogh as he sought to master the basics of drawing and painting. The painting’s provenance is uncertain, and for decades its attribution was debated, with some experts only recently agreeing on its authenticity after close examination of its technique and materials. In Lying Cow, van Gogh chooses a humble subject: a solitary cow resting in a field, its massive form sprawled across the foreground.
The animal’s head is turned slightly, eyes half-shut, capturing a moment of quiet repose amid the labor of country life. The muted earth tones and heavy brushwork reflect van Gogh’s admiration for Jean-François Millet, whose scenes of peasant life inspired him deeply. Unlike later, more vibrant depictions of animals by artists such as Rosa Bonheur, van Gogh’s cow is rendered in somber, almost monochrome hues, emphasizing the weight and stillness of the creature rather than its vitality. The painting’s subsequent history is less dramatic than its uncertain attribution.
There is no record of a patron or early exhibition, and it is likely that van Gogh painted it for his own study, possibly never intending to sell it. After the artist’s death, the work passed quietly through private hands before entering a public collection. Today, Lying Cow stands as a testament to van Gogh’s early dedication to observation and his empathy for the rural world, offering a rare, grounded counterpoint to the swirling energy of his later masterpieces.
