Still Life with Cabbage and Clogs — History & Facts
Few visitors realize that Still Life with Cabbage and Clogs marks one of the earliest surviving still lifes by Vincent van Gogh. Painted in 1881, it belongs to the brief period when Van Gogh, still in the Netherlands and not yet the colorist of Arles, was teaching himself to paint by studying humble objects in his family's home. This work is a rare window into the artist’s formative years, when he was still searching for his voice and experimenting with the somber palette of Dutch realism. The painting captures a simple, almost austere scene: a cabbage, rough-hewn clogs, and a few scattered onions or potatoes, all arranged on a plain tabletop.
Van Gogh’s choice of objects is no accident—they speak to the rural labor and modest means of the Dutch countryside, echoing the themes of toil and dignity found in his later The Potato Eaters. The cabbage’s crumpled leaves and the worn leather of the clogs are rendered with a careful, almost loving attention to their textures, suggesting both the hardship and the quiet pride of everyday life. Unlike the lush, abundant still lifes of Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin, Van Gogh’s arrangement is sparse, the light subdued, emphasizing the honesty of the subject rather than its beauty. The precise history of Still Life with Cabbage and Clogs as an object remains somewhat obscure, as is the case with many of Van Gogh’s early works.
It was likely painted while he lived in Etten, before his move to The Hague, and may have remained in the family’s possession for some years. Scholars have noted that Van Gogh rarely sold or exhibited his early still lifes, and many were given away or lost. Today, the painting is held in a private collection, and its appearance in exhibitions is infrequent.
As an early experiment, it stands at the threshold of Van Gogh’s career, offering a glimpse of the artist before the explosion of color and emotion that would define his later masterpieces.
