The Transfiguration of Christ — History & Facts
A luminous Christ hovers at the center of the upper half, arms raised and draped in billowing white, surrounded by a golden aura that breaks through the surrounding clouds. To Christ’s left and right, two male figures in flowing robes—one in green and white, the other in ochre—float in the air, their bodies angled toward him, each caught in a moment of awe or revelation. Below them, three disciples lie sprawled on the rocky ground, shielding their faces or gazing upward in astonishment, their garments rendered in deep reds, greens, and yellows.
The rocky outcrop divides the composition horizontally, separating the miraculous vision above from the crowded, urgent scene below. The boy’s body twists in distress, his eyes wide, mouth open, and limbs tense, as several men point or reach toward him, their faces marked by concern and agitation. A man in blue and ochre sits at the lower left, clutching a large book and gesturing with his hand, while another figure in red leans forward, mouth open as if speaking or calling out.
The crowd’s gestures and glances create a swirl of movement, all converging on the kneeling woman and the afflicted child, intensifying the drama of the lower scene. Soft, golden light streams from the upper center, illuminating Christ and casting a subtle glow on the faces and garments below, while the background recedes into shadowy trees and distant hills. The artist uses strong contrasts of light and dark to heighten the sense of the miraculous, with smooth, blended brushwork in the clouds and sky and sharper, more textured strokes in the drapery and faces.
Small details, such as the delicate folds of cloth, the expressive hands, and the wild hair of the boy, reveal the artist’s attention to both drama and naturalism. The Transfiguration of Christ is a work by Raphael, a master of religious art.
