The Triumph of Pan — History & Facts
A riotous gathering of figures fills the forest clearing, where dancers, musicians, and mythical creatures swirl in celebration. At the centre, a woman in a blue dress rides a goat, her arm outstretched as a man kneeling before her crowns her with a garland of flowers. To her left, a satyr blows a long horn, his cheeks puffed with effort, while another figure behind him clutches a wineskin and looks upward.
On the right, two women in flowing blue and pink drapery dance with raised arms, one holding a tambourine, their faces animated with joy. Below them, a group of figures wrestle and tumble, their bodies entangled in a chaotic heap, while a child with a basket of flowers sits nearby, watching the revelry. The ground is strewn with musical instruments, overturned baskets, a mask, and a large decorated vase, suggesting the aftermath of feasting and play.
Tall, slender trees frame the scene, their trunks rising vertically and casting long shadows, while a distant landscape opens beyond the clearing under a luminous sky. Warm, earthy tones dominate the palette, with flashes of blue, pink, and gold in the costumes, and the brushwork appears smooth and controlled, giving the figures a sculptural clarity. The composition is tightly packed, with overlapping bodies and diagonals that guide the gaze across the lively crowd and into the wooded background.
Small details, such as the goat’s expressive face and the intricate patterns on the vase, reveal the artist’s attention to both character and ornament. The Triumph of Pan was painted by Nicolas Poussin in 1636.
