Francisco de Zurbarán

Spanish, 1598–1664

Francisco de Zurbarán (1598–1664) was a Spanish Baroque painter recognized for his religious works featuring monks, nuns, and martyrs, as well as for his still-life paintings. He was baptized on 7 November 1598 in Fuente de Cantos, Extremadura, to Luis de Zurbarán and Isabel Márquez. Zurbarán's use of strong contrasts of light and shadow earned him the nickname "Spanish Caravaggio." He completed major commissions for religious institutions in Seville and was appointed painter to Philip IV; he died in 1664, leaving an estate valued at about 20,000 reales.
