German, 1868–1932
Max Slevogt (1868–1932) was a German painter and illustrator associated with Impressionism, particularly known for his landscapes and plein air style. He studied at the Munich Academy and later attended the Académie Julian in Paris. Slevogt produced caricatures for magazines, exhibited in Vienna, and joined the Berlin Secession. His travels, including a trip to Egypt in 1914, influenced his use of color, and he also worked as an official war painter during World War I, created illustrations, designed opera scenery, and participated in the art competition at the 1928 Summer Olympics.
