Muirhead Bone

Scottish, 1876–1953

Sir Muirhead Bone (1876–1953) was a Scottish etcher and watercolourist known for his images of industrial and architectural scenes, as well as his work as a war artist during both World Wars. Associated with the last generation of the Etching Revival, he produced many different states of his etchings, encouraging collectors to acquire multiple impressions. Bone served on the British War Memorials Committee and the War Artists' Advisory Committee, promoted younger artists, and was a trustee of major British art institutions. Born in Partick, Glasgow, he trained as a draughtsman, studied at the Glasgow School of Art, and began printmaking in 1898, focusing on landscapes and architecture.
