Théodore Géricault The Assumption of the Virgin. around 1810. Bremen Kunsthalle. (19655923434) — History & Facts
Before Théodore Géricault became known for his dramatic scenes of shipwreck and madness, he tackled the sacred. The Assumption of the Virgin, painted around 1810, is remarkable as one of his earliest surviving religious works, created when he was barely twenty. Its existence is a rare glimpse into the formative years of an artist who would soon shake the art world with Romanticism.
Unlike his later, turbulent canvases, this painting aligns with the traditions of the French academic style, yet hints at the energy that would soon define his career. The scene captures the Virgin Mary at the climactic moment of her Assumption, as described in Catholic tradition: her body and soul lifted to heaven at the end of her earthly life. Géricault chooses the instant where Mary, draped in flowing robes, is raised by a swirl of cherubs, her arms open in acceptance. The apostles below gaze upward in awe, their gestures echoing disbelief and devotion.
A shaft of light breaks through the clouds, illuminating Mary’s figure and separating the divine from the earthly—a device reminiscent of Rubens’ own Assumption in Antwerp Cathedral, though Géricault’s figures are more restrained, their emotion contained within classical poses. The early date of The Assumption of the Virgin places it before Géricault’s celebrated The Raft of the Medusa, and its style reflects his training in the studio of Pierre-Narcisse Guérin. The painting’s provenance is not fully documented, but it is now housed in the Bremen Kunsthalle, far from its Parisian origins. Its presence there is a testament to the dispersal of French art across Europe in the nineteenth century, as collectors and museums sought to fill gaps left by war and revolution.
For Géricault, this work marks the tension between academic discipline and the restless innovation that would soon make him a central figure in Romanticism.
