American, 1859–1934

Cass Gilbert (1859–1934) was an American architect known for his early advocacy of skyscrapers and for designing major public buildings such as the Woolworth Building, the United States Supreme Court Building, several state capitols, and libraries. His work in the Beaux Arts style reflected his belief that architecture should embody historic traditions and established social order. Gilbert spent his early career in Minnesota, where he designed railroad stations, private homes, and the Minnesota State Capitol before moving to New York. He led the American Institute of Architects in 1908–09, and his influence on skyscraper design was noted during the early twentieth century.
