Belgian, 1886–1952
Constant Permeke (1886–1952) was a Belgian painter and sculptor associated with the School of Latem and a leading figure in Flemish Expressionism. Influenced by elements of Fauvism, Cubism, and folk traditions, he helped establish an independent expressionist movement distinct from German Expressionism. Permeke’s career included periods of painting and sculpture, with his work declared degenerate during the Nazi occupation of Belgium, after which he resumed painting in the late 1940s. He was honored as an officer in the Order of Leopold in 1922 and was commemorated on the 1,000 Belgian franc bill in 1997.
