Oswald Achenbach

German, 1827–1905

Oswald Achenbach (1827–1905) was a German landscape painter associated with the Düsseldorf school of painting. He was regarded during his lifetime as a leading European landscape artist and influenced the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf through his teaching. Achenbach began studying at the academy at age eight and undertook extensive travels in Upper Bavaria, North Tyrol, and northern Italy, where he focused on nature studies and Italian landscapes. His older brother, Andreas Achenbach, was also a significant landscape painter, and together they were humorously called "the A and O of Landscapes."
