Jean-Antoine Watteau

French, 1684–1721

Jean-Antoine Watteau (1684–1721) was a French painter and draughtsman whose short career led to renewed interest in colour and movement, following the tradition of Correggio and Rubens. He transformed the late Baroque style into the more naturalistic and less formal Rococo. Watteau created the genre of fêtes galantes, depicting elegant outdoor gatherings with a theatrical quality, and often drew inspiration from Italian comedy and ballet. Born in Valenciennes, he began his artistic training locally before moving to Paris in 1702, where he developed his distinctive sketchlike technique and absorbed influences from Flemish, Dutch, and Venetian art.
