Pierre Bonnard

French, 1867–1947

Pierre Bonnard (1867–1947) was a French painter, illustrator, and printmaker, recognized for his decorative style and bold color choices. He was a founding member of the Les Nabis group, and his early art was influenced by Paul Gauguin and Japanese prints. Bonnard painted a variety of subjects, including landscapes, city scenes, portraits, and domestic interiors, often emphasizing background and color over the main subject. He lived with Marthe de Méligny from 1893, marrying her in 1925, and she appeared in many of his works.
