Harry Clarke

Irish, 1889–1931

Harry Clarke (1889–1931) was an Irish stained-glass artist and book illustrator, a leading figure of the Irish Arts and Crafts movement. His illustrations — intricate, jewel-toned and often macabre — reached their peak in editions of Edgar Allan Poe's Tales of Mystery and Imagination, the fairy tales of Perrault and Hans Christian Andersen, and Goethe's Faust. Blending Art Nouveau, Symbolism and the line of Aubrey Beardsley into something wholly his own, Clarke created some of the most hauntingly beautiful illustrations of the twentieth century.
